Founded in February 2007 by distribution veteran Robin Smith, KINOSMITH has quickly established itself as one of Canada’s most exciting and successful boutique operation in the country releasing over 63 feature films within the first 19 months of operation. Notable releases include Rolf de Heer & Peter Djigirr's TEN CANOES, Giuseppe Tornatore's THE UNKNOWN WOMAN, Shane Belcourt's TKARONTO and the box office hit, UP THE YANGTZE by Yung Chang. KINOSMITH also has the exclusive distribution rights in Canada for the following US distribution companies: Outsider Pictures, Palm Pictures, FiGa Films, Mitropoulos Films and Music Box Films.
KINOSMITH works closely with domestic and international producers, distributors and sales agents in order to present the most diverse works in the Canadian market – from the smart and arty to the sheer entertaining. For each release, KINOSMITH applies a hands-on approach to distribution, ensuring the right mix of creative strategy, industry experience and market knowledge is used to maximize each project’s awareness and returns.
Beyond from offering traditional distribution services, KINOSMITH also provides an alternative option for filmmakers via service contracts. KINOSMITH also has been called upon to help larger distributors such as Seville Pictures, TVA Films, Peace Arch Entertainment and Anchor Bay Entertainment to handle their releases in Canada.

ROBIN SMITH (CEO, Founder)
Robin Smith has currently started his own distribution, production and marketing consultation company called KINOSMITH. KINOSMITH helps fill a void in consolidating Canadian distribution forces, providing marketing advice to productions in development and in the can, as well as acting as Executive Producer on a variety of upcoming Canadian feature film and television product. Robin brings a strong background of over 17 years of film, video and arts-related work to his new company. KINOSMITH has had recent success with the theatrical release of the Canadian documentary UP THE YANGTZE which has currently grossed over $600,000 domestically.
Previous to starting KINOSMITH, Robin worked at Capri Releasing Inc. as their Vice-President of Distribution triggering and releasing such films as AWAY FROM HER, THE SQUID AND THE WHALE, TARNATION and DARWIN'S NIGHTMARE. Prior to joining Capri, Robin held positions at Seville Pictures as their Director of Sales and Marketing, Lions Gate Film Entertainment as Director of Marketing & Distribution for their Video and Theatrical Divisions and Blackwatch Releasing as Vice President of Marketing and Distribution. He has successfully executed the Canadian release of both international and domestic films such as CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON, ALL ABOUT MY MOTHER, RUSSIAN ARK, SWIMMING POOL, YOU CAN COUNT ON ME, SWEET AND LOWDOWN and POLLOCK.
Previous to Blackwatch, Robin worked in sales at Alliance Atlantis' Motion Picture Division for 2 years and spent 8 years at the Toronto International Film Festival acting as their Jury Coordinator, the Theatre Staff and Operations Manager, and General Manager for the Film Circuit – an outreach program that initiated & developed the circulation and exhibition of Canadian and foreign films to smaller Canadian markets throughout the country. He was also employed by the National Film Board of Canada as Marketing Coordinator and Cinema Programmer.
Robin is also actively involved with various film festivals within the country. He was a board member with the First Weekend Club, the Canadian Feature Film Festival and the Moving Pictures Film Festival, consultant for Brit Pics Film Festival, juror for OMDC Feature Film Fund and Calling Card programs, TELEFILM WRITERS FIRST program, and panelist for Vancouver International Film Festival, Whistler Film Festival, Cinefest Sudbury, ImagiNative Film Festival and Reel World Film Festival. Robin is currently teaching Feature Film & Video Distribution and Movie Marketing courses at Ryerson University. |
